Dreadful company to deal with. When rushed into hospital on medical emergency, had to cancel 3 trips. Failed to answer queries, failed to respond, lost documentation. Small claim considering 3 trips, yet they rang airlines up asking if I was a no show-even though they had documentary evidence I was an inpatient in hospital at time of flight. Nationwide blamed their underwriters UK Insurance, whilst they blamed Nationwide. If you write to Nationwide CEO your letters are automatically sent to their fobbing off department.
If they handle small claims like this, how would they treat a large medical incident overseas?. I’m still waiting for claims to be dealt with-in the meantime I have taken out alternative cover for future trips with a more reputable and recommended company. Please be wary of Nationwide Travel Insurance-you get what you pay for. Poor value.

The service that I received from Nationwide travel insurance was shockingly poor when my passport was stolen and I was stranded whilst on holiday! I will never use their travel insurance again!

I got in from work to find that my bedroom ceiling had collapsed due to water coming in from tiles blown off the roof in heavy rain. I contacted Nationwide straight away and was told that the earliest they could get somebody out to look at the damage was 3 weeks (as there was a lot of storm damage in the area) by which time I was due to be out of the country. When I said that I still had water coming in I was told that I could get the damage fixed myself as it was an emergency so I arranged for a local builder to come around and fix the ceiling and tiles that had been blown off the roof. It cost £640 and I had £250 excess so it was a fairly small claim. It was 6 weeks before somebody cam around (due to Nationwide’s issue with contractors and then me being away) and when the firm came around to inspect it they said that as everything had been repaired they couldn’t see any damage and so there couldn’t be a payout! I had photos that I sent through to Nationwide but they said they didn’t prove what caused the ceiling to collapse so wouldn’t pay out!! Total con – I would advice people not to make repairs themselves even if told to do so – make the insurance company send somebody out to inspect straight away.

We had our door kicked in and were broken into just after New Year and had around £6000 worth of things stolen including Stereo, PS3, TV. we also had a fairly amount of spirits and champagne etc stolen left from Christmas and new year. First nationwide could not get anyone to fix our door for 24 hours (meaning we would have been without a door overnight and next day) but they did not cover a local carpenter to fix it. Also they expected us to claim for door under building’s cover rather than pay under contents meaning we would incur a separate 300 excess. Also once we had submitted claim (we had to find replacement prices for everything) they sent a loss adjuster round. The man was so unfriendly and suspicious it made me feel more violated than the burglars. I felt my lifestyle was under attack as I found myself having to explain the drink was left over from a party and that I collect port etc. I had to supply receipts for everything which took days to get together from bank statements etc. They did finally settle but not after making ME feel like the criminal rafter than the victim.
